Nigerian billionaire businessman and senator, Prince Ned Nwoko, has once again set social media on fire with his recent defense of polygamy, declaring that “men with only one wife are standing on one leg.”
The Delta North senator, known for his outspoken views and luxurious lifestyle, made these remarks during a recent interview, where he passionately argued that polygamy is not only cultural and religiously supported, but also socially beneficial in modern Nigeria.
In his characteristic confidence, Nwoko said he genuinely pities men who choose monogamy, insisting that the practice leaves them “unbalanced” — both emotionally and socially.
“Imagine standing on one leg. That’s what it feels like to have only one wife. With two, three, or even four, you are more balanced,” he quipped.
He went further to emphasize that the Old Testament supports polygamy, referencing several biblical figures who had multiple wives. “I am a man of faith,” he said, “and my faith does not condemn it.”
Beyond religion, Ned Nwoko presented economic and social reasons for encouraging men to marry more wives. He argued that polygamy could help reduce prostitution and social instability, particularly in southern Nigeria.
According to him, the culture of northern Nigeria, where men often have multiple wives, has helped maintain family structures and reduced the number of unmarried women.
“When men marry more wives, they provide security, stability, and purpose for women who might otherwise be left struggling. Instead of keeping multiple girlfriends, marry them — it is more honorable,” he stated.
As expected, Nwoko’s comments have sparked mixed reactions online. While some supporters hailed him for speaking “truths that society hides,” others called his views outdated and misogynistic.
Nollywood actor Uche Maduagwu criticized the senator, accusing him of glamorizing a lifestyle that only the wealthy can afford.
“Ordinary Nigerian men can’t feed one wife, talk more of two or three. Ned should stop misleading the youth,” Maduagwu posted on Instagram.
Social media has since been buzzing with memes, debates, and hot takes. While some men jokingly echoed Nwoko’s “standing on one leg” metaphor, women’s rights advocates expressed concern that his remarks undermine the growing movement for gender equality and balanced family structures.
Whether you agree or disagree, Ned Nwoko has once again proven he knows how to get Nigerians talking. His latest defense of polygamy touches on deep cultural tensions that go beyond entertainment — it’s about how modern Nigeria defines marriage, masculinity, and morality in the 21st century.
