Legendary journalist, public intellectual and former presidential adviser Reuben Abati marked a milestone today, turning 60 and the President joined the chorus of well-wishers.

In a warm congratulatory message, President Tinubu described Abati as a “distinguished journalist, columnist, broadcaster and media executive” whose insights and commentary have “enlightened and inspired” Nigerians across generations.

Abati, who at different times served as Special Adviser on Media & Publicity to former President Goodluck Jonathan, is celebrated not just for his service in government but for his continuing impact in journalism, academia and public commentary.

President Tinubu also acknowledged the recent launch of three new books by Abati—Portraits: People, Politics and Society, A Love Letter and Other Stories, and How Goodluck Jonathan Became President. Urging him to keep afoot in his mission of shaping national discourse.

The Presidential Villa release noted Abati as “one of our nation’s prolific chroniclers.”

The statement extended special prayers for Abati’s good health, longer life and continued contributions.

The celebration comes amid a spate of high-profile birthday tributes from the President to senior figures in journalism, politics and civil society signalling a tone of reconciliation, respect and cross-sector recognition.

This isn’t just a ceremonial birthday wish, it symbolizes something broader. Abati’s career straddles media, government, and intellectual life in Nigeria, making him a bridge between different spheres of influence. President Tinubu’s salute signals the value placed on such figures in nation-building.

From a media-industry angle, the tribute also underlines the ongoing role of strong commentary and journalism in shaping public discourse. By publicly acknowledging Abati’s impact, the Presidency is reaffirming the importance of intellectual voices even from former government insiders.
