President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has carried out a sweeping shake-up of Nigeria’s military leadership — a move seen as part of his renewed effort to tackle the country’s worsening insecurity.
In a statement released late Thursday, the Presidency announced the removal of General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff, along with several other top service chiefs.
Taking their place are:
- General Olufemi Oluyede — Chief of Defence Staff
- Lieutenant General W. Shaibu — Chief of Army Staff
- Air Marshal S.K. Aneke — Chief of Air Staff
- Vice Admiral I. Abbas — Chief of Naval Staff
According to the statement, the President thanked the outgoing officers for their “dedicated service” and urged the new chiefs to “uphold discipline, professionalism, and unity of command” as they assume office.
The reshuffle comes amid mounting frustration over rising banditry, insurgency, and separatist violence across the country.
Analysts say Tinubu’s move reflects a growing urgency within Aso Rock to re-energize the armed forces and restore public confidence in national security.
It also follows weeks of rumours about internal discontent among senior officers — and regional instability triggered by military coups in neighbouring West African countries.
With the new Defence Chief, General Oluyede, expected to spearhead reforms and fresh operations, all eyes will be on whether this leadership change can produce tangible results on the battlefield — and in the streets where Nigerians have long awaited relief from fear and violence.
