A new UK law will prevent automatic reinstatement of British citizenship for individuals linked to terrorism, extremism, or serious organised crime.
The Deprivation of Citizenship Orders Act 2025, which received Royal Assent on 27 October, ensures that citizenship will not be restored until all appeal avenues are fully exhausted. The change follows a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that allowed reinstatement after a single successful appeal.
Under the new rules, individuals deemed threats to national security will not be released from detention or permitted entry into the UK while appeals are ongoing.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis said the measure reflects the government’s commitment to national security, while maintaining existing appeal rights. The Act also prevents individuals from renouncing other nationalities to make themselves solely British, closing another legal loophole.
