As the countdown to the much-anticipated Anambra governorship election continues, Awka, the state capital, has turned into a fortress with an unprecedented show of security might.

The Nigeria Police Force, alongside sister security agencies, has rolled out a massive security operation covering all 21 local government areas in the state.

According to reports, over 60,000 security personnel drawn from the police, army, NSCDC, DSS, and other agencies have been deployed to maintain law and order before, during, and after the polls.

Commissioner of Police in Anambra State confirmed that the force has introduced advanced tactical measures, including helicopter patrols and drone surveillance, to ensure full coverage and prompt response to any security threats.

Tactical units, intelligence operatives, and mobile squads have been strategically positioned around border communities, flashpoints, and polling centers.

We have placed Awka and other sensitive areas under constant surveillance. Every move is being monitored in real-time to guarantee a peaceful and credible election,” a senior police official said.

Beyond physical deployment, the command has emphasized inter-agency collaboration, stressing the need for intelligence sharing among all security outfits.

Security operatives have also undergone refresher training on professional conduct, human rights, and crowd control—measures aimed at ensuring neutrality and discipline during the election.

Meanwhile, residents in Awka have noticed increased patrols, roadblocks, and helicopter movements in recent days, creating a mix of reassurance and tension among voters. The police have urged citizens to stay calm, cooperate with officers, and report any suspicious activities.

Election observers note that this year’s operation marks one of the most extensive security preparations in the history of Anambra elections, a move seen as both proactive and necessary given past incidents of election-related violence.

Analysts say while the scale of deployment demonstrates commitment to a peaceful poll, the real test will lie in coordination, rapid response, and maintaining neutrality throughout the process.

“The presence of security forces should inspire confidence, not fear. The integrity of the security agencies will play a vital role in determining the credibility of this election,” a political analyst remarked.

As Awka braces for election day, all eyes are on how effectively these measures will translate into a peaceful and transparent voting process.
